That was the year that was...

It's been an eventful year to say the least. For a guy from Kidderminster I have been incredibly lucky at times and have done things I would never have believed possible. It started with sending off two episodes of a script I helped write with two other guys to six production companies/producers. Amazingly we had replies from three- all very positive, but none that wanted to pursue it further, but they were interested in any other ideas we might have. One of the companies even invited us down to London for a chat. (Thanks Maria!) That was an incredibly surreal, but amazing experience.

Sadly, due to one thing and another, that part has stalled somewhat. But, away from writing with the team I have continued to work on my own things. I've had a bash at topical comedy writing, even though it isn't really my field of expertise, however I'm happy that I have definitely improved on this the more I have written. So much so that I made the Newsjack script twice, but sadly not the final edit, and eventually got a joke onto BBC Scotland's Breaking the News programme, which was an unbelievable buzz.

I also finally got around to writing the pilot of a show I'd been talking about for years. The feedback I have had so far from this has been incredibly positive. I appreciate that this has only been from friends and family currently, but I am absolutely chuffed with the way it has been received. I took the bold step of submitting it to a competition, so the potential for feedback from two people I really respect is a distinct possibility. Keep those fingers crossed for me towards the end of January!

What's in store for 2020? I have no idea if I'm honest. I'm going to keep on writing more and more and hopefully I will continue to improve. And, with a bit of luck, the right person might read something I did and be interested in seeing what else I can do. Now all I need is a small lottery win so I can do this full time, rather than have to go to work for 40 hours a week. Imagine how much more I could get written if I had that kind of time!?

So farewell 2019, bring on the roaring twenties! x

BBC Newsjack returned on Thursday 25th February at 10.30pm on BBC Radio 4 Extra for a four-episode run. 'Etudiant' Sketch - Broadcast on BBC Newsjack - S23 E4 15-10-20

As you will have no doubt already read in my essay here , I was absolutely chuffed to get a sketch on S23 E4 of BBC Radio 4 Extra's Newsjack. You can listen to the sketch via the embeded link and then read what I actually submitted to the show and see where the script editors did a fantastic job of punching it up. MikeCooperRP · "Etudiant" Sketch from BBC Newsjack S23 E4 Student anger over ‘junk’ food parcels in isolation Universities are facing anger from students over conditions some have faced while self-isolating in campus accommodation. Students have criticised the cost and quality of food provided to them - which seems a bit rich considering most students seem to live off a diet consisting purely of pasta and beans on toast! A night out at the latest fancy eatery must seem like an impossible dream to most students right now…       FASHIONABLE NEW DINING EXPERIENCE - ÉTUDIANT ATMOS:           ...

Phone Scam Sketch

This is a sketch I submitted to Newsjack S24 E4. Apologies as always if the formatting is odd as it is pasted straight from word. Phone scammers asked for £1000 to stop calling Trading Standards has announced that nuisance and scam calls have been on the rise during lockdown - with some people reportedly being stung for thousands of pounds. I had someone call me recently saying my Just Eat account had been hacked as someone had used it every night for a week, I had to explain I just couldn’t be bothered to cook. With so many people being caught out by scammers, could it give others ideas on how they could make some extra money…              FX:                          MEETING ROOM EFFECTS PERSON 1:              OK, as you know Rishi announced some very costly ...
